Thessaloniki International Aiport “Macedonia”
3 Hours Before Flight Time
Arrival at airport of Thessaloniki (Macedonia International Airport). Our transfer will be waiting for you at the airport to take you to your hotel in Grevena. Stopover in Vergina for a short tour (A shocking experience for travelers which take them back to the era of mighty Macedonian state and magnificence of Alexander the Great, the place of the Royal Tombs, where you see the King’s mausoleum and the famous museum with finds of the Tombs of King Philippos II, father of Alexander the Great. The travelers will visit the most important remains of the
monumental palace of the Kingdom of Macedonia, lavishly decorated with mosaics and painted stuccoes, and the burial ground with more than 300 tumuli, some of which date from the 11th century B.C.)
Transfer to the hotel in Grevena, the city of mushrooms in North Greece. Check in. The participants will be a welcome meeting with the group leader. Travelers will receive the detailed agenda and download mobile application of tour.
A short seminar for the basic issues of nature photography will be by a professional photographer (equipment, use – photographing, special topics such as wildflowers, snow, waterfalls, gorges, etc.).
Free time to explore the city of Grevena and dinner at a local tavern.
After breakfast the participants will have the chance to enjoy an amazing tour in a unique mountain scenery in the National Park of Valia Calda. The tour combines a rout with 4×4 jeep and easy hiking with a professional photographer’s guide . Hiking for 90 min in the forest to Arkoudorema and in the same time the participants will meet and photograph rare red pines, poisonous spools, alpine newts, wild flowers and various kinds of mushrooms. Participants will collect mushrooms and they will learn a lot about these and other herbs of the forest. Further on they will visit the famous stone bridges of Grevena through a beautiful route. They will visit the double-arched bridge Ziakas (41m. long and 3m. wide), which is next to the new bridge that leads to the village at the river Velonia. The group will visit the historic village Spileo to photograph the stone buildings and visit the old church Virgin Mary Spiliotissa (built in 1633). They will depart to Portitsa Canyon (the most striking part of Grevena) with the homonymous stone bridge (8 km.) and return. Traditional meal in one of the best taverns. Departure for the bridge of Aziz Aga, the biggest bridge in Western Macedonia, with a 16 meters arc, where you will be guided in order to take photos. The next visit will be at the Paleontological Museum of Milia, which hosts the largest tusks in the world, (5.02 m. long), from a three million years old mastodon, which recently were awarded with the Guinness Record ( If it is open). Return at the hotel.
Dinner at “Avles” a restaurant specialized in wild mushroom meals which prepares up to 100 different mushroom recipes !!!
Trip to Kastoria where participants will have the unique experience of nature photography. From the distance a magnificent Macedonian landscape with houses, churches, trees, the fishermen with flat-bottomed boats, the pelicans and their reflections shimmering in the lake.
Further on a tour of the lake for idyllic photos and stopover at least twice; once to venture into the Dragon’s Cave and marvel at its stalactites and stalagmites; and then to view the superb paintings on the facade and inside the Panagia Mavriotissa monastery. It’s considered the oldest such complex in Western Macedonia.
The participants will take photos from the lake, the birds, the boats, the city-view and the famous area Doltso with many stone buildings. These manor houses are Architecturally superb and representing fortunes made in the fur trade in the 18th and 19th century. Free time for coffee always with the lake in plain sight and a short visit the luxury fur and leather shops. Kastoria is the most important productive fur center in Europe. Before returning to the hotel participants will make a stop at Dispilio for visit five clay huts that are exact replicas of dwellings in the Neolithic lake settlement first discovered in the 1930s and the famous Monastery of Panagia Mikrokastrou.
Back to the hotel – Dinner will include a lovely mushroom soup and tagliatelle with parmesan and truffle accompanied by local organic wine – Free time and overnight.
Photo safari in the botanical paradise “Bourinos”. Participants will be transferred at the Bourinos Mountain which, due to its great ecological importance and its unique biodiversity, is included in the NATURA 2000 Network, the European Network of Special Areas of Conservation, which is famous for having the rarest wild flowers and herbs worldwide. They will first visit Siatista, just 20 minutes away from Grevena. Participants will meet the members of the Mountaineering Club who will guide them at the Botanical Museum of Siatista, which hosts a huge number of rare wild flowers and herbs of Bourinos. The participants can take amazing photos, unique in the world.
They will have a brief tour at the Ecclesiastical Museum, at Saint Dimitrios church and at the famous church of Saint Paraskevi (built in 1677) with the gilded carved iconostasis and subversive paintings in which ancient Greek philosophers are depicted among the saints.
Before departing from Siatista participants will taste the unique “iliasto” wine of Siatista at a local winery, and then, together with guides of the Mountaineering Club, they will start the ascent of mount Bourinos.
Participants will have a walk to the mountainous nature, where they will have the opportunity to see wild mushrooms among rare wild flowers and herbs during the whole route. They will learn about the geology of the mountain and enjoy the indescribable view of the Mesiano Water Valley from the terrace of the Mountaineering Club’s shelter. Participants will take photos for which they will be proud to have them in their collection and show them to their friends.
Return at the hotel in Grevena.
Cooking seminar. Executive chef will show how to prepare Greek delicacies with local products. The participats will learn how to cook a Greek salad, tzatziki, saganaki, fried mushrooms, grilled wild mushrooms, pickles, omelets with wild mushrooms. Then they will enjoy the meal cooked by them accompanied with local tsipouro or organic wine.
After breakfast the travelers will have a day – trip to Meteora. Meteora is a unique geological phenomenon, a breathtaking landscape in which visitors have the opportunity to see the achievements of the monks who have built the monasteries of Meteora in rugged peaks rocks centuries ago. Meteora are included in the World Heritage list of UNESCO. The travelers will visit 2 of the 6 monasteries and will remain overwhelmed by the view and the rocks in which the monasteries are built in the 14th century AD. Meteora provide an outstanding example of the types of monastic construction which illustrate a significant stage in history, when the eremitic ideals of early Christianity were restored to a place of honor by monastic communities, both in the Western world and in the Orthodox Church. The travelers will learn which monastery was the first to be established and the true motivations behind the monks’ decision to try to climb the steep rocks of Meteora and build the monasteries there. All day the travelers can photograph the amazing nature of Meteora and the Byzantine treasures.
At the afternoon the group return back to the hotel in Grevena.
Photo seminar. The participants will attend a unique training program for art of photography. A Greek teacher who is qualified, specialized and experienced in teaching the art of photography will reveals the its secrets.
Free time for relaxation and leisure and dinner in hotel. Overnight.
After breakfast travelers will be transferred to the airport for the return flight. If the flight is late afternoon the participants can enjoy optionally a city tour which includes seven hot spots of Thessaloniki center. The tour starts from the White Tower (the main landmark of the city) and is followed by a visit in Agia Sofia and Agios Dimitrios, Byzantine church and its crypt, Byzantine castles (Ano poli), the Galerius Arch (Kamara), the Aristotelous Square, the Port of Thessaloniki and finally the famous Archeological Museum.
The participants will have experienced a photo safari in the wild nature and received a lot of knowledge for the secrets of photograph. They are given the opportunity to see the amazing mainland Greece. Also, they will have enjoyed Greek gastronomy and they will have gained extraordinary experiences of Greek music and dances.
It is almost certain they will soon return to another V-travel tour & trip……..
When I started the tour, I wanted to learn how to take out good pictures and also to enjoy my holidays in Greece. Photography is a way of expression of the reality around us. Some have innate talent and some just need someone with experience, knowledge and love for what they do, to awaken the ” hidden artist ”. The teacher plays a very important role in this. My participation in this tour made me love the art of photography. The professional photographer taught us that photography is art and not a job. I’m very excited because at the same time I met a fantastic mainland Greece. I want to attend the courses again …….
